Honouring & Shaming

The International ethecon Awards 2014

On occasion of the International Day of Peace on September 21st, ethecon – Foundation Ethics & Economy announces this year’s awardees of its two international awards: The award of honour, the International ethecon Blue Planet Award 2014, goes to Slovenian peace activist Tomo Križnar (Slovenia). The award of shame, the International ethecon Black Planet Award, goes to DOW CHEMICAL’s (USA) chairman of the board Andrew Liveris as well as the board member James Ringler and the major shareholders of the chemicals group.

Awarded annually, the International ethecon Blue Planet Award honours outstanding efforts for the preservation and rescue of our Blue Planet. The International ethecon Black Planet Award denounces people who bear responsibility for the shocking ruin and destruction of the earth and thus have created the risk of a Black Planet. These two ethecon awards have been awarded since 2006.

This year’s Black Planet Award is meant to name and shame DOW CHEMICAL’s (USA) chairman of the board Andrew Liveris as well as the board member James Ringler and the major shareholders of the chemicals group, i.a. responsible for the now 30 years lasting gravest chemical disaster in Bhopal, India, as well as “for countless grievances and crimes in the name of profits“ (Justification International ethecon Black Planet Award 2014 from 21.09.2014). The Blue Planet Award will honour peace activist, film-maker and journalist Tomo Križnarfor his exemplary commitment to solidarity and ethics; for his courageous commitment to the rescue and preservation of our Blue Planet“ (Justification International ethecon Blue Planet Award 2014 from 21.09.2014).

Mia Farrow finds these words about Tomo Križnar: „There is no one remotely like Tomo Križnar. Over decades, with singular courage and conviction he has journeyed through the most remote and perilous parts of Dafur and Southern Sudan documenting atrocities, taking photographs and compiling information that is as invaluable as his humanitarian endeavours“. Tomo Križnar works mainly in Sudan, documenting the civil war in Darfur, but also in the Nuba-mountains and at the Blue Nile. Regardless of the danger for his own life, he has relentlessly exposed shocking truths und denounces the rich and powerful for the greed with which they seek to acquire ever more land and resources, while the plight and even death of the people as well as the destruction of the country’s environment leaves them cold. He has filmed various documentaries making the international community aware of the disastrous situation in the countries. At great personal risk, he also distributed free cameras to the affected people living in the mentioned areas, giving them the opportunity to document attacks and killing by the militias. „In a world that increasingly seeks profit as the sole criterion of any decision and development, ethecon sees the actions of Tomo Križnar as an outstanding contribution towards the rescue and preservation of our Blue Planet. For this exemplary support and development of human values, ethecon - Foundation Ethics & Economy honours Tomo Križnar with the International ethecon Blue Planet Award 2014“ (Justification International ethecon Blue Planet Award 2014 from 21.09.2014).

The list of DOW CHEMICAL’s crimes against mankind and the environment is a long one: Party donations during election campaigns, tax evasion, environmental destruction like radioactive contamination and support for genetic engineering, manipulated measurements, war mongering, price manipulation, corruption... The company’s president and chairman of the board and supervisory board Andrew Liveris, the member of the board and audit committee James M. Ringler as well as the group’s major shareholders are the ones that need to be held responsible for the decisions and actions at DOW CHEMICAL (USA). They own the group. They run the company. They are acting to increase their personal power and private wealth. To this end, they ride roughshod over morality and ethics and hazard our planet being turned into a Black Planet. “ethecon regard the actions of Andrew Liveris, James M. Ringler and the major shareholders of DOW CHEMICAL company (USA) as a shocking contribution to the ruin and destruction of our Blue Planet. It is because of this appalling disrespect for and violation of human ethics that ethecon – Foundation Ethics & Economy denounce those responsible for DOW CHEMICAL with the 2014 International ethecon Black Planet Award“ (Justification International ethecon Black Planet Award 2014 from 21.09.2014).

The International ethecon Awards will be awarded during a public ceremony in Berlin. Tomo Križnar will be there and accept his award in person. Further information regarding registration will be available in due course.

Over the past years, the International ethecon Blue Planet Award has gone to Diane Wilson/USA (2006), Vandana Shiva/India (2007), José Abreu and Hugo Chávez/Venezuela (2008), Uri Avnery/Israel (2009), Elias Bierdel/Austria (2010), Angela Davis/USA (2011), Jean Ziegler/Switzerland (2012) and Esther Bejarano/Germany (2013). By receiving the International ethecon Black Planet Award, on the other hand, managers and major shareholders of the following groups have been shamed: MONSANTO/USA (2006), NESTLÉ/Switzerland (2007), BLACKWATER (XE)/USA (2008), Formosa Plastics Group/Taiwan (2009), BP/UK (2010), TEPCO/Japan (2011), GLENCORE/Switzerland (2012) and DEUTSCHE BANK/Germany (2013).

Unlike many foundations funded by a certain company, family, church, political party or state, ethecon is one of the few “bottom-up” foundations, currently supported by 39 donors and committed to future generations by campaigning “for a world free from exploitation and repression!” Our young foundation depends on donations and support through members.

Priznanje & graja

Mednarodne ethecon Awards 2014

Ob mednarodnem dnevu miru 21. septembra 2014 je sklad ethecon etika in ekonomija oznanil imeni prejemnikov letošnjih ethecon nagrad: Mednarodni ethecon Blue Planet Award 2014 počasti slovenskega mirovnega aktivista Toma Križnarja iz Slovenije. Mednarodni Black Planet Award 2014 dodeli grajo predsedniku uprave Andrewu Liverisu, članu uprave Jamesu Ringlerju ter velikim delničarjem in delničarkam kemijskega koncerna DOW CHEMICAL (ZDA).

Za to občudovanja vredno skrb in razvijanje človeških vrednot počasti sklad ethecon etika & ekonomija Toma Križnarja z mednarodno ethecon Blue Planet Award 2014.“ (utemeljitev mednarodne ethecon Blue Planet Award z dne 21.09.2014).

So lastniki koncerna in ga vodijo. Ravnajo v korist osebne moči in privatnega bogatenja. Za to strašljivo kršenje človeških etičnih norm graja ethecon – sklad etika & ekonomija odgovorne osebe koncerna DOW CHEMICAL z mednarodno nagrado ethecon Black Planet Award 2014.“ (utemeljitev mednarodne ethecon Black Planet Award z dne 21.09.2014).

Slovesnost podelitve obeh mednarodnih ethecon nagrad bo potekala v okviru javnega slovesnega dogodka v Berlinu. Dodatne podrobnosti o dogodku bodo objavljene v danem trenutku.

Mednarodne nagrade ethecon Blue Planet Awards so v preteklih letih počastile Diane Wilson/ZDA (2006), Vandana Shiva/Indija (2007), José Abreu in Hugo Chávez/Venezuela (2008), Uri Avnery/Izrael (2009), Elias Bierdel/Avstrija (2010), Angela Davis/ZDA (2011), Jean Ziegler/Švica (2012) ter Esther Bejarano/Nemčija (2013). Na drugi strani so Mednarodne nagrade ethecon Black Planet Awards doslej grajale menedžerje in velike delničarje/delničarke sledečih koncernov: MONSANTO/ZDA (2006), NESTLÉ/Švica (2007), BLACKWATER (XE)/ZDA (2008), Formosa Plastics Group/Tajvan (2009), BP/Velika Britanija (2010), TEPCO/Japonska (2011), GLENCORE/Švica (2012) in DEUTSCHE BANK/Nemčija (2013).

(2006), Vandana Shiva / India (2007), José Abreu y Hugo Chávez / Venezuela (2008), Uri Avnery / Israel (2009), Elias Bierdel / Austria (2010), Angela Davis / EE.UU. (2011), Jean Ziegler/Suiza (2012) y Esther Bejarano/Alemania (2013).
